we had a fantastic show on the DLF and Johnsons sports seed stand, the demand for information on the new seed range was so great on the wednesday we struggled to keep up and by mid morning thursday we had actually run out! i think its a great sign that despite all of the gloom that the media like to constantly spread there seems to be a great level of posistivity in the trade!

Industry statistics actually show that the busiest periods are between 10am and 2pm, the quietest periods being between 8 and 10am and after 2pm. People eat on the course nowadays and eat after they come in irrelevant of the time. The Belfry actually has 2 other courses where you can tee off at 8 am in the morning in the frost and maintains the Brabazon as a 10.30 shotgun start to try and avoid the frost. 8am shotgun start and 12pm??? Do you really think that golfers get around in 3h30 mins on a decent golf course to get them off the course before a 12pm?? Do you know it gets dark at 4pm in the Winter, how will everybody get around in that time?? Most top end courses don't allow golf in the frost so a two tee start is not really viable in the Winters. This is the best way for me to get golf in and let everybody get around before the dark. I have played in a shotgun with 30 teams in and still finished in under 5 hours on a championship course and this was not The Belfry.

These are worrying statistics. I remember when there were huge waiting lists at golf clubs. What has happened? We have been forced to work longer hours for less money and therefore have less leisure time. Also, larger mortgages have contributed to this culture - house price rises have destroyed golf. Where are the day off for golf followed by a boozy mid afternoon session? Oh joy.

I suppose clubs have to compete to get golfers onto their course, and if not more importantly ensure their existing and new members are very happy. I am in a company that has developed online solutions to help clubs get new members and keep them (like buddy up where new members can post messages looking for playing partners - the thought behind it being, if you have someone to play with you are far more likely to remain a member of the club)- have a look at our features and let me know if you think they can help find and retain members at www.bookitee.com

The golf course at Ganton is the only one not on a coastline that may properly be called a links. Not links 'type', not links 'style', but links proper.

No geology lecture intended, but a links course may only be found on a shoreline where ice-age glacial alluvium deposits carried by rivers have linked at their lowest point with the sand of the bay. Broad fertile deposits therefore were formed on territory previously under the ocean. Further aided by prevailing off-shore winds and storms, which would raise sand storms and thus aid in resurfacing, the links that we know today appeared like something out of Brigadoon to form uneven grassy land immediately behind the beach. This freak of nature is rare in areas with mild winters.

Links are dotted around Britain’s island coastline. Strangely enough, and just to prove truth stranger than fiction, the one and only inland links, at Ganton in Yorkshire, now is all of 12 miles from the seashore. But there’s no mystery, for ancient records and more recent geological explorations have shown that, like all proper links, it was once under water; a prehistoric river bed with its jaws open to the ocean.

This was the first conference I have attended. I am the secretary at a club that has a small membership and was somewhat concerned as to whether finacially this would be worthwhile. I have to say that from start to finish it was a really good event. I have come back with so many ideas that will help my club at very little cost, I am still buzzing! The conference was well organised with some very interesting speakers and informative side sessions, if you haven't been, go to the next one.

Congratulations to Keith and the team at the GCMA for an excellent event. The conference embraced the challenging times we are in and made clear that focussing on a high quality, sustainable golfing experience alongside great customer service is vital for golf clubs at this time. It was great to see an educational programme that gave Managers the opportunity to break out and top up individual skills whilst also allowing important time for networking with each other and the exhibitors.

As a first-time attendee, I found the conference highly rewarding an extremely beneficial. The combination of presentations, plenary sessions and opportunities to network and share best practice was well balanced. It has certainly provided me with many ideas to implement at my own Club. I would recommend anyone involved in managing a Golf Club to attend future conferences.

A broad list of relevant subjects covered by a varierty of speakers with a world wide perspective of our evolving industry. In my opinion the best conference available in the UK for professional managers.

My first visit to the coference and it certainly lived up to its status. Very good speakers and the value of newtworking with fellow colleagues was invaluable, You cannot put a price on that and I'll certainly be going to the next conference

Once again the GCMA Conference was an event that is a must for aspiring Golf Club Managers. The content of the presentations, the learning gained from the speakers and networking with colleagues was inspiring. The suppliers attending were all relevant to the Golf Clubs and their requirements. Well done to those organising the conference so professionally.
