Golf GameBook, the free live-scoring app featuring on-course social interaction between golfers and their friends, has been shortlisted in two categories for the 2015 Sports Technology Awards.

Developed by PGA professionals playing on The Challenge Tour and European Tour, the app, which is now the fastest growing golf community in the world with more than 850,000 downloads, has been shortlisted for both Best Use of Technology by a Sponsor and Best Sports App.

Since its initial launch in 2010, Golf GameBook has helped a number of high profile businesses with the activation of golf sponsorship, including Audi, BMW and Volvo; however, its engagement in MasterCard’s 2014 ‘Keep score and be a scorer at The Open’ campaign, was the catalyst for its nomination in the Best Use of Technology by a Sponsor category of the 2015 Sports Technology Awards.

MasterCard’s strategy for the six-week campaign was to reach active golfers at a relevant moment in a manner enabling them to share the experience via social media to help strengthen its brand image among British golfers.

With two places up for grabs as an official scorekeeper for the tour professionals competing in The 2014 Open Championship, plus 20 ‘Priceless Surprises’ – namely a pair of tickets to the event – more than 18,000 rounds of golf were played on Golf GameBook during the campaign delivering 6.2 million social media impressions.

Mikko Manerus, co-Founder and CEO of GameBook Ltd., said: “The synergy between winning a prize to score for a tour professional as a result of scoring your own round made Golf GameBook a compelling vehicle for the campaign.

“However, more importantly for MasterCard, Golf GameBook is uniquely able to both reach active golfers at the relevant moment and enable them to share the experience with friends, family and other players.”

With 1 million downloads of the app approaching rapidly, and 2.5 million rounds of golf recorded so far, Golf GameBook is also shortlisted for the Best Sports App category, and is the first and only free live scoring app that offers social interaction between players and friends.

Part of Golf GameBook’s strategy has been to put its technology in the hands of the world’s best golfers and it has been selected to manage the live scoring for a number of Pro Am tournaments taking place prior to high profile European Tour events, including the recent 2015 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

The Sports Technology Awards ceremony will take place in London on March 27, 2015.
