Innovation in putter design

A specialist British company is claiming a breakthrough in golf-club design, with the introduction of a putter designed to impart topspin to every shot, regardless of where the ball impacts the putter face.
Topspin, or “ball roll”, has long been recognised as a key element of successful putting, says Dr Norman Lindsay, creator of the ‘All- TS‘ putter from Lindsay Golf. “Imparting topspin to a putt, instead of the backspin imparted by many conventional putters, helps the ball to track more accurately and improves length control. A badly designed putter can give so much backspin to a ball that it loses 35% or more of its initial energy through skidding before it begins to roll.”
All- TS putters are designed to address this problem, featuring a patented impact face with fine horizontal ridges that distribute the impact force across the dimples of a golf ball to improve line accuracy. The front flange of the club’s elegantly shaped stainless steel head is slender and swept low at the heel and toe, while the rest of the body is low and deep, locating the club’s centre of gravity very close to the sole. This encourages golfers to hit the ball slightly above the “sweet spot”, giving the ball a mixture of speed and topspin that is claimed to result in near-constant putt length. Three shaft styles are available, offering a choice of face, toe or neutral balance.
The improved performance available to golfers using the new putter has been verified by precise measurements, says Dr Lindsay, who studied engineering prior to a career in the medical and defence electronics industries. Since 1991, he has combined his technological expertise with a love of golf, firstly to develop a system designed to accurately analyse a golfer’s swing and, more recently, to create the All- TS, which he claims is the world‘ s most advanced topspin putter.
