Putting ‘guru‘ chooses Huxley surface

12.00pm 10th October 2003 - Corporate

A practice putting green from Huxley Golf has been selected as the ideal surface for the very first Putting School of Excellence established by Britain’s renowned “Putting Doctor”, Harold Swash.
Opened officially in mid September, the school is already attracting leading European tour professionals as well as middle to low handicap club golfers keen to improve their putting technique.
Installed by Huxley Golf within a dedicated, air-conditioned room on the ground floor of the Royal Clifton Hotel in Southport, Merseyside, the practice putting green comprises a highly realistic, premier-quality all-nylon surface measuring 22ft long by 20ft wide (6.7m x 6.1m).
The entire putting surface is mounted on an unobtrusive, purpose-built wooden frame and features a layout and speed designed specifically to satisfy the demanding teaching needs of Harold Swash. In addition to producing a consistently true roll of the golf ball, the surface also meets his speed requirements, achieving a stimpmeter reading of between 10 and 12. This speed is maintained, or can be increased, by a light rolling of the surface, carried out with the help of a special roller also supplied by Huxley Golf.
Running horizontally over the first two yards of its length, the putting surface then rises gradually through eight inches over the next five yards before sweeping up to an almost vertical slope at the top end of the room.
Other facilities and teaching aids within the school include mirrors on three walls, video and high-speed camera recording of putting actions and a special frame known as “the rack” designed to help golfers to achieve a consistently true putting stroke on the green.
“There is no other all-weather teaching facility like it in the world for golfers looking to improve an often-neglected part of their game,” pointed out Harold Swash. “Relatively few professional golfers, let alone amateurs, have ever had a putting lesson. Thanks to the Huxley Golf practice putting green, which provides a very realistic and consistently true roll of the ball, I will be looking to help them trim their scores, utilising methods employed to teach and coach leading players across Europe and North America over the past 30-plus years.”
