Towards a YOB culture

A new business model pioneered by Yorkshire based company YOB Golf is rapidly winning them a loyal group of friends among PGA professional friends. YOB stands for Your Own Brand and the company’s unique business model does exactly that by providing golf clubs with their very own personalised range of high quality/ low priced soft goods totally protected from retail price erosion and thus delivering sustainable and healthy retail margins.
Yob Golf was formed in 2005 and is the brainchild of two PGA professionals Tom Armitage and Robert Woolhouse. Their retail experience, at their respective golf clubs, had shown that it was becoming increasingly difficult to compete with large multiple retailers. Products often had to be sold virtually at cost delivering no profit at all. Their vision was to supply a range of soft goods to golf clubs that were branded only with their most valuable unique asset – the club crest – effectively giving total exclusivity to the club which means that the product cannot be purchased at any other retail outlet and is therefore immune from price discounting. Product ordering is flexible and supported with excellent customer service.
A pilot launch in 2006 was met with an outstanding response. No fewer than 50 customers were quick to support the company including (Moortown, Lindrick and Southport & Ainsdale). John Eyre PGA professional at Crossland Heath Golf Club was full of compliments for YOB Golf. “My own brand has created new interest into the pro shop and generated a number of new sales. I’m very happy with the quality of products and service received and I am already looking forward to further sales with YOB Golf products in the future.”
A similar view is held by Lewis Horsman at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Golf Club. “I have been very impressed by the YOB Golf concept. Without doubt personalised golf products are becoming more saleable and profitable than uncrested products. It’s been a long time since I made great profit margins on quality products, I’d strongly recommend all pros to create their own brand.”
YOB Golf is launching an all new improved product range for 2007 which will include high specification cart, stand and pencil Bags, travel cover, holdall, umbrella, shoe bag and suit cover accessory items. Bags come with a detachable panel that can be embroidered with the club crest providing added flexibility. The same quality embroidery process is applied to the accessory items with the exception of the umbrella where screen printing is utilised.
