The Golf Show 2013, Europe’s leading golf trade show and educational event, has announced Dr Steve Otto, R&A director of research and testing, is to speak at this year’s Teaching & Coaching Conference.

The former NASA staff scientist will join a line-up of golf experts, including Pete Cowen and Scott Cranfield, speaking on the final day of the 2013 event, which takes place at the Harrogate International Centre, 8-10 October.

With a degree and PhD in mathematics, Otto worked for three years at NASA Langley before becoming a Senior Lecturer in mathematics at the University of Birmingham.

In 2004, Otto joined the R&A where he continues to oversee the evaluation and testing of golf equipment, organise research into the fundamental physics of golf and ensure the rules governing club and ball manufacture are pertinent to the modern game.

Describing his Teaching & Coaching Conference session, Dr Otto said: “Using scientific research and statistical analysis from every level of the game I’ll be dispelling some myths about golf (including golf ball driving distance), explaining the consequences of the ways equipment and courses are set-up, as well as challenging the way coaches approach teaching the game.”

David Colclough, PGA Head of Member Education, said: “There has been tremendous technological advancement in golf equipment in the last 10 to 20 years. Golfers are more aware than ever before of spin rates, clubhead speed and with gradually increasing control over their own equipment through custom fitting and adjustability.

“Steve’s insight into the role modern technology plays is invaluable to PGA Professionals. As the first point of contact for the majority of golfers, PGA Professionals must be knowledgeable about the role technology plays in the modern game to optimise their coaching and custom fitting propositions.”
