IOG SALTEX Preview

10.00pm 1st September 2005 - Exhibitions & Conferences

IOG SALTEX 2005 will be staged at Windsor Racecourse 6-8 September opening at 9 am each day. Here we preview just some of the exhibits that will be on show from, amongst many others, AGCO; Bayer Environmental Science; Bernhard Grinders; Campey Turf Care Systems; John Deere; Etesia; Headland Amenity; Kubota; Lindum Turf; Ransomes Jacobsen; Rivendell Projects; Terrain Aeration; Turfmech; Wiedenmann (UK); and Yamaha Motor IOG SALTEX www.iogsaltex.co.uk

AGCO – Stand U18
AGCO will be using 100m² extra space on its expanded stand at Saltex to show its widest ever range of equipment for professional users. Joining Massey Ferguson for the first time this year is also equipment from Fendt and Valtra.
This enlarged show presence further enforces the company’s commitment to developing its groundscare division. Well-known industry figure Colin Gregory has recently joined the company to spearhead this drive and two product specialists will add further strength to the team.
Massey Ferguson has recently introduced a range of new and innovative products and is continually developing new equipment designed specifically to meet the needs of groundscare, municipal, amenity and turf professionals. Indeed, Saltex will see the launch of new MF compact tractors, which come in at the lower power range of the recently introduced MF 1500 Series. www.agcocorp.com

Bayer Environmental Science – Stand G03
Subject to approval, three new products from Bayer Environmental Science stand will be seen at Saltex for the first time.
‘Pistol’, the new residual total herbicide for soft and gravel surfaces, is designed for control of annual and perennial weeds on land not intended to bear vegetation and in amenity situations. The first of the actives in the formulation works via a unique ‘barrier activity’ which inhibits the germination of weeds coming up to the surface, giving longer lasting control. The second active controls weeds already at the surface.
‘Scorpio’, an ultra-low dosage fungicide, uses a unique Mesostemic mode of action that defines a new class of fungicides: oximinacetates. Oximinacetates have a high affinity with the plant surface and are absorbed readily by the waxy layers of the plant. The product redistributes at the plant surface by superficial vapour movement and penetrates the plant tissue. The product embeds into the waxy layer of the blade/leaf; absorption by the waxy layer gives longer-lasting disease control.
The long awaited chafer grub control product, which has under gone extensive UK trials over the last two years, is awaiting final approval from the PSD and, if this is received in time, will be officially launched at Saltex 2005.
The company will also be displaying industry leading turf fungicide, Chipco Green, the only contact turf fungicide with Knapsack sprayer approval, and selective herbicide Nocweed, which can be used on even very young turf.
The condensed version of the Bayer Technical Manual, designed to give instant information for those not needing the extensive technical data in the full manual, and the widely used Spray calibration calculator CD will be available free of charge.

Bernhard Grinders – Stand P36
After viewing the products at last year’s show, The Kendleshire Golf Club, just off the M32 near Bristol, has recently purchased a set of Bernhard Express Dual and Anglemaster 3000 grinders. With more and more golf clubs recognizing the benefits of an in-house grinding system the line-up of grinders at this year’s show will include the latest high-tech Express Dual 5000.
The Kendleshire Golf Club has plans for considerable expansion at the course. A dedicated workshop has been set up by the club to accommodate the Bernhard grinders, together with welding equipment, and is manned by a full time mechanic. Designed to suit all budgets grinders also include: Gear Rite, Rapid Relief, Rapid Facer together with revolutionary Rota Master for rotary mowers, Chain Master and Chipper Master. www.bernhard.co.uk

Campey Turf Care Systems – Stand A57
Campey Turf Care Systems will unveil the latest additions to their range of equipment for fast and effective sports turf maintenance and rejuvenation.
Shown for the first time will be the TurfWorks International Amenity Management System. Designed to fit most popular greens triples, this new greens maintenance system transforms greens mowers into incredibly versatile turf care machines. The System comprises cassette modules that replace the cutting reels, enabling a host of other essential tasks such as scarification, grooming, brushing, slitting and spiking to be carried out all from the same system. In addition there is the added benefit of being able to add a vibrating roller which operates on twin rollers, or in combination with other cassettes.
The TurfWorks International Amenity Management System maximises equipment utilisation and reduces the amount of costly machinery that a golf course has to buy and maintain.
Also featured will be the Dakota Turf Tender top-dresser range and a new range of Turf Trailers, the impressive Koro equipment range for speedy sports ground rejuvenation without reliance on chemicals, and the Raycam Core Harvester which collects cores speedily via its fully floating and adjustable pick-up head.

John Deere – Stand V01
Saltex will see the UK launch of John Deere’s brand new commercial mower for local authorities and contractors, alongside a new compact tractor and a new range of Gator utility vehicles.
The 7H17 Commercial hydrostatic walk-behind mower is the first designed by John Deere for European conditions with a dedicated rear discharge deck, and is ideal for a variety of demanding commercial grass cutting applications. It features a 17hp engine and a 48in rotary mower deck, fabricated from heavy-duty 10 gauge steel for durability and a longer working life.
The new small chassis 2020 Series compact tractors join the larger mid and large chassis models in the 20 Series range. These 24 and 26hp machines offer increased torque and lower fuel consumption from a Tier 2 low emission engine, a new hydro transmission and a new deluxe cab. There is also a choice of new ‘drive-over’ mid-mounted rotary mower decks for easier attachment, including a 60in rear discharge unit.
John Deere already offers the most comprehensive line-up of utility vehicles in the market, from the electric E Gator to the heavy duty diesel Pro Gator. The new T (for Traditional) Series are the latest additions to the Gator range, and will include TE, TS and TX models.
These Gators are faster and more powerful than the previous generation, while also offering improved braking, with all-round hydraulic disc brakes, increased payloads of up to 454kg, and enhanced operator comfort, with more legroom and all-wheel suspension as standard. A ROPS certified cab is available for all models, with a choice of hard or soft doors.

Etesia – Stand A36
Commercial operators will recognise the nightmare of trying to cut and collect grass in the pouring rain. Etesia ride-on rotaries have the answer with their unique direct-collect system which does not clog, even in long wet grass. For larger areas, Etesia’s 124cm Hydro 124 diesel-engine ride-ons are probably the most highly efficient rotaries on today’s market. They include high-lift and ground level emptying models.
Low decibel ratings combined with high output make the 100cm Hydro 100E tractor the number-one rotary for noise sensitive sites. It also collects leaves and litter. At 80cm, the Hydro 80 ride-on is the only professional rotary narrow enough to pass between standard gate posts to reach areas which can only otherwise be accessed by pedestrian mowers.
In response to the ever-increasing demand to recycle organic matter, Etesia have produced the Biocut mulcher. This deck is featured in two mowers from Etesia – the Biocut 53 walk-behind and the Hydro 144 mulching ride-on. Aerodynamic design of the cutting deck plus the specially profiled cutterbar ‘lifts’ the grass before cutting it. Clippings swirling beneath the deck are chopped into fine particles, before being returned to the turf to decompose naturally.
Etesia pioneered the introduction of the ride-on brushcutter in the UK. Their Attila range is now extended to include the 95cm and 85cm models, plus the 180cm Attila A180 all-terrain mower. There is also the Attila AV51 pedestrian brushcutter.
Anyone choosing a rotary mower from Etesia’s Pro or Viva pedestrian ranges can rest assured that they are buying the best on today’s market. Built for long life and reliability, their range of rugged push and self-propelled walk-behinds come in a wide selection of cutting widths.
The company’s motto is “seeing is believing” – www.etesia.com

Headland Amenity – Stand H44
Headland launches two new iron related products, perfectly timed for Autumn/Winter 2005 and Spring 2006.A new Soluble Iron, shown during tests to dissolve nearly twice as fast as comparable products, and a new Greentec fertiliser with 9% iron for use on fine and close-mown turf.
“Greentec 4+0+10+9Fe features high potassium, and a high iron content alongside an appropriate level of nitrogen for autumn and spring periods” explains Headland’s Andy Russell. “This formulation will not provide an excess of nutrient at the wrong time of year, even when applied at the optimum 40gms/m2 rate.” Fine granules of between 1.0 and 1.5 mm ensure good spread characteristics and effective coverage.
Headland’s new Soluble Iron’s ability to dissolve rapidly, makes the product an ideal tank mix partner for liquid and water-soluble fertiliser applications on fairways, winter sports pitches and racecourses, while Greentec fertiliser 4+0+10+9Fe is suitable for golf and bowling greens as well as all other areas of amenity turf. www.headlandamenity.com

Kubota – Stand W23
The new RTV900 all-terrain utility vehicle will be making its IoG SALTEX debut on the Kubota exhibit at this year’s show. Representing Kubota’s first-ever move into the utility vehicle sector, the RTV900 is designed to be as tough and versatile as the range of compact and larger tractors produced by Kubota for agriculture, horticulture and the turf, amenity and landscaping industries.
Key features of the vehicle include a 22hp three cylinder water-cooled diesel engine, all-wheel drive and Kubota’s unique three-range variable hydrostatic transmission known as VHT. The latter delivers rapid acceleration, excellent traction across all surfaces and impressive hill climbing ability thanks to the inclusion in the system of an additional hydrostatic assist motor that “kicks in” when climbing a slope, delivering instantly more torque to the drive wheels. VHT also provides dynamic braking for safe, controlled hill starts and descents without having to use the vehicle’s in-board sealed wet disc brakes.
Offering a load-carrying capacity of 500kg within its hydraulically-tipped cargo box, full hydrostatic steering and room for a passenger, the RTV900 is expected to prove a major attraction on the Kubota stand.
Other newcomers on Kubota’s 2005 Saltex exhibit will be the G21-PRO and G21HD-PRO diesel ride-on mid mowers, which supersede the highly successful G18 model. www.kubota.co.uk

Lindum Turf – Stand G10
As one of four UK turf growers accredited to use Barenbrug’s new Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (R.T.F.) cultivar in its turf products, Lindum is launching the new turf on a reinforced felt base.
Extensive trials on RTF have confirmed its excellent wear tolerance, similar to perennial ryegrass. It also has good tolerance of shade, salt and frost and can withstand waterlogging and drought due to its rooting depth capability. These results give Lindum’s managing director, Stephen Fell cause to suspect that RTF could well be the next possible stadium grass.
“RTF is also capable of rooting to a depth of 1.5 metres,” he says “which means that alongside its shade and wear tolerance is a strong resistance to drought, making it ideally suited to the south of England, where hose pipe bans are already threatened. Coupled with our reinforced felt technology, the combination of RTF Grassfelt is perfect for dry, shady banks and steep inclines in a landscaping situation, or as an instant stabiliser on motorway embankments.”
RTF Grassfelt is available in a choice of biodegradable or non-biodegradable growing mediums, and like the original Grassfelt can be harvested to any size or shape required, eliminating the joins which result from turf harvested in conventional rolls. Lindum Turf www.turf.co.uk

Ransomes Jacobsen – Stand V15
Driving environmental performance is once again the theme of this year’s stand with many alternative energy and environmentally sensitive products on display including the Ransomes Highway LPG triple mower, the Jacobsen E-Walk electric greens mower, plus E-Z-GO electric and LPG powered golf buggies and utility vehicles.
There is also the launch of the new Ransomes Lawn and Garden product range which features a versatile mix of walk-behind and compact ride-on mowers plus turf utility vehicles that reflect the 170 year heritage of the Ransomes brand. The latest Jacobsen tees and surrounds mower, the TR3, will be showcased on the stand.
Completing the line up is the Jacobsen MagSystem range of magnetic bottom blade attachments. There will be over 70 turf maintenance machines and related equipment on display, proving once again that Ransomes Jacobsen is the one-stop shop for turf professionals. www.ransomesjacobsen.com

Rivendell Projects -.Stand B14
Rivendell is a new venture formed to develop, market and distribute the products of South African manufacturer Protea Turf Equipment in the European Union. It owns the long-term distribution rights for these excellent products and is committed to the successful development of the Protea brand in the UK and continental Europe.
Protea is an established South African manufacturer of a range of grasscutting and associated products. The company has been extremely successful in its home market for many years but has never exported to Europe. Rivendell has collaborated closely with Protea to develop already successful designs to meet the specific requirements of the European market.
All Protea products have an excellent reputation in South Africa for reliability, performance and value for money. For 2005, a range of industrial-quality pedestrian cylinder mowers is being introduced in 8-blade and 12-blade versions, in cutting widths up to 36 inches. All are powered by Subaru Robin EX engines for the best reliability and performance and are equipped with Datatag® anti-theft identification systems as standard. These will be followed later this year by a separate range of lighter-weight high-quality cylinder mowers designed primarily for the domestic market and smaller sports clubs. Available initially at 20-inch and 25-inch cutting widths with 12-blade cylinders and low-cut bottom blade, the Greensmower versions of these new machines will be priced very attractively and will offer exceptional value. www.rivendell-projects.co.uk

Terrain Aeration – Stand DAB39 & 45 (Demo area)
Terrain Aeration launches Airforce Scamper, the smallest, lightest and nimblest of the company’s 4 wheeled, ride-on, deep compressed air de-compaction machines to date.
Designed and built by managing director David Green, Scamper leaves the “air force”, the engine and compressor unit powering the probe on a trailer, connected to the machine by a 100 metre long air hose. Sporting flotation turf tyres and driven by an 11 hp Honda engine, Scamper weighs in at ¾ tonne less than Airforce, the larger combined engine and compressor ride-on, and is aimed at golf courses with steeply undulating ground and/or waterlogged golf greens, as well as bowling greens and National Trust properties where access is difficult.
“This machine has a maximum weight of 600 kilos and a top speed of 7mph,” explains Green. “It’s a step up from Tracker, our pedestrian operated model whose caterpillar tracks inhibited its use on soaked greens without the use of boards. Though light, Scamper is more stable and the hydraulically powered back wheels enable the negotiation of steep banks and tight corners.” www.terrainaeration.co.uk

Turfmech – Stand W28
A new robotic golf ball collector from Turfmech Machinery is set to make the retrieval of golf balls from practice ranges a far safer and less labour intensive job. Known as Ballpicker, the high-tech machine uses the same advanced operating systems as the Bigmow large area robotic mower, launched by Turfmech on to the consumer and professional grass-cutting markets during the summer.
Fully automatic in operation – with manual override available as and when required – Ballpicker works completely randomly within a pre-defined area bounded by a buried low voltage cable across which the machine will not pass. As the battery-powered Ballpicker moves across the ground, it sweeps up all golf balls lying in its path and drops them into an on-board container with a capacity of more than 600 balls.
When the basket is full – or earlier, depending on machine programming and battery condition – Ballpicker returns automatically to the golf ball release station which doubles also as the recharging point for the machine’s batteries. Once docked at its release station, Ballpicker offloads its basket of golf balls and readies itself to set off across the range on a new collection schedule. The release station can be linked to virtually all golf ball conveyors.
Equipped with sonar, touch sensitive bumpers and fail-safe emergency stop controls, Ballpicker has been designed to be virtually silent and totally safe in operation while also being sufficiently rugged to withstand the impact of golf balls. These three features combine to allow the machine to carry on working while golfers practice, reducing the requirement to have a large number of golf balls in reserve or to employ a specially-guarded vehicle or even to close the range while balls are retrieved – all expensive options to range owners.
Price of the machine and its installation will be announced at the show. www.bigmow.biz

Wiedenmann (UK) Ltd – Stand V26
