UK Golf Course Owners/Operators continue fight against VAT ‘Distortion’

2.16pm 28th August 2015 - Management Topics

Logo-UKGCOA UJackTreasury officials have asked the project team of the UKGCOA, England Golf and KPMG to obtain more data from proprietary golf clubs who are seeking a resolution to the serious VAT distortion in the golf industry. To assist a rapid response Andy Lloyd-Skinner, CEO of the UK Golf Course Owners Association, has issued an urgent appeal to all golf club owners to supply thee information.

“As you may know,” he begins, “the project team of the UKGCOA, England Golf and KPMG had an encouraging meeting with senior officials at the Treasury at the end of July in relation to finding a resolution to the serious VAT distortion in the golf industry. The Treasury issued a list of 19 questions to the project team and six of these questions require a robust and technical response requiring the collection of further data from proprietary golf clubs, followed by detailed technical analysis and summarising by KPMG’s team of economists.

“Therefore, it is vital that proprietary golf club owners/operators respond to the below questionnaire as accurately and as quickly as possible to ensure that the momentum we have created with the Treasury towards a resolution of VAT distortion is maintained. If you have reasonable management reporting systems, it should take about 30 minutes to complete the questionnaire, which can be downloaded here:

“I cannot say this any other way, you have the potential for your quarterly VAT bill to be cut by tens of thousands of pounds if you support this action by firstly completing the questionnaire as quickly and as accurately as possible and secondly contributing to the tax equality fund established by the UKGCOA which is being used to instruct KPMG’s experts to assist with the work required by the Treasury. Please focus your attention on completing the questionnaire as soon as you receive it, I make no apology for issuing regular emails to chase responses over the next two weeks.

“If any proprietary golf facility owner/operator does not wish to complete the questionnaire, it will be helpful to know a reason. If you are in this category, please let me know by email to andy@ukgcoa.com as soon as possible, so that I can respond to any concerns you may have. Please note that any confidential data of individual golf businesses will not be at risk as golf club names are not required and emails with responses attached will be deleted on receipt of the completed questionnaire.

“I will send a separate email in relation to the tax equality fund in a few days, but in the meantime if you require any clarification on questions within the questionnaire please address them to:
