Foundation Championships grow in popularity

12.05am 24th January 2002 - People

Analysis of participation in the 2001 Weetabix Golf Foundation Age Group Championships has shown that the total number of children taking part in the event has increased from 3,800 in 1999 to 5,600 in 2001. Particularly encouraging is the news that the percentage of girls competing at the regional stage has increased from 12% in 1999 to 17% in 2001.

Mike Round, Golf Foundation executive director, commented, “Over 600 Golf Clubs ran club qualifying competitions for their juniors making this one of the most popular junior golf competitions in the British Isles.” Previous winners have included Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Mhairi McKay and Rebecca Hudson. Details of the 2002 event will be distributed to all golf clubs in February and the event culminates in the grand final to be held at the Marriott Forest of Arden in August.
