Hamptworth Golf and Country Club has appointed Ian Hugglestone as its new general manager as the business continues to expand. He was previously secretary of Salisbury and South Wilts Golf Club and has big ambitions to match those of Hamptworth’s new owner Carl Faulds.

The course in the north of the New Forest between Southampton and Salisbury is famous for being home to the unique 666 yard Par 6 hole called ‘The Beast’.

Its stunning location and exciting plans prompted Ian to take on the general manager role and he is promising further innovations that will attract members and visitors.

Following refurbishment of the clubhouse, the course is undergoing major development work. This includes huge drainage improvements, new bunkers and tees and extensive work on the greens in preparation for the busy summer season.

Ian, prior to moving into the golfing sector, worked in customer focused commercial environments, including large retail, and is now putting that experience to good use, developing and growing the club.

Carl Faulds, who purchased the country club last year and has already invested £250,000 in improvements to the facilities, said: “It became clear that to achieve the targets set out following the purchase we required a first class general manager.

“Ian’s vast experience in golf, but also in other sectors, will help lift Hamptworth to a new level. Already we have innovated by creating ‘The Beast’ – a Par 6 hole – and Ian has plenty of ideas to help take the cub forward.”

Ian said: “I was persuaded to come by the overall vision of the owner and the opportunity to develop the club both on the course and in the clubhouse, which includes a thriving restaurant.

“I am already busy developing ideas to enhance our membership offer and attracting new business to grow the club. The Hamptworth estate is a wonderful setting and there really is an embarrassment of riches here.”

As well as the quality golf course, Hamptworth has five international croquet lawns, tennis section and function room.
