Howard Swan receives achievement award

12.00pm 7th March 2005 - People

The National Turf Grass Foundation has presented Howard Swan, principal architect at Swan Golf Designs, with the British Turf Grass Industry Award for outstanding lifetime achievement.
Howard Swan, who has more than 30 years experience in the golf industry, started his career alongside his father in the family-owned golf course contracting company in 1972. He worked with him, learning his trade for twelve years on national and international projects, before starting his own design practice in 1987.
During that time, Howard was instrumental in creating the British Association of Golf Course Constructors, which set high standards for those eager to join and also ensured that prospective clients in the UK could be guaranteed a first class professional service.
In 1991 he was invited to join the membership of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects. He serves on the Institute’s Council and was President in 1998-2000. Howard also played a key role in the merger of the Institute with the French and European societies to form the European Institute in 1998. He now chairs the Institute’s Education Board.
Howard Swan has always been a champion for the industry and the profession and is a strong advocate of establishing a future for young golf architects in a professional education programme. His Essex design practice currently employs architects from England, Croatia, China and Finland working in 26 countries.
