Nomination of next R&A Captain

The Past Captains have nominated William John Uzielli as Captain of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club for the year 2000/2001.

John Uzielli was born in Madras, India, in 1937 and was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Oxford. By profession he is a marine insurance broker and is a director of Hogg plc.

He was an Oxford Blue from 1958 to 1960 and captained Oxford in his final year. He went on to win the President’s Putter in 1965 and is the current President of the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society. A member of the winning Marlborough Halford-Hewitt team in 1972, he has played over 100 matches in each of the President’s Putter and Halford-Hewitt. He is a past captain of The Berkshire Golf Club and a member of Trevose Golf Club.

John Uzielli is widowed with two children. His wife Angela was Ladies’ British Amateur Champion in 1977, English Ladies’ Amateur Champion in 1990, represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup in 1978 and was a six times winner of the Senior Ladies’ British Amateur Championship.

Since becoming a member of the R&A in 1979 John has served on the Championship Committee and the Rules of Golf Committee.
