Clubhaus Acquires Three UK Golf and Country Clubs

7.00am 29th October 1999 - Property

Clubhaus PLC has this morning announced the acquisition of the business and assets of Mentmore Golf & Country Club near Aylesbury, Mapledurham Golf and Health Club near Reading and Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre near Orpington.

These acquisitions bring the total number of clubs owned by Clubhaus to 22, of which 16 clubs are in the UK and 6 in continental Europe.

Mentmore Golf and Country Club is a well-established 36-hole members club with high quality health and fitness facilities. It has approximately 1,200 golf members and 1,600 health club members. It is located close to several of the clubs within the Clubhaus portfolio including the Warwickshire and Castle Royle and this will provide cross selling opportunities and the potential to exploit economies of scale.

Mapledurham Golf and Health Club is an 18-hole members club with approximately 450 members. A new health and fitness facility is currently under construction, on similar lines to the Clubhaus model, comprising a state of the art gym which will include the latest technogym equipment (as installed at Castle Royle), an aerobics studio, spa area and new changing rooms. This new health club will open early in the New Year and is expected to provide a significant uplift to the performance of the club.

Chelsfield Lakes is a well-established members/daily use facility with approximately 450 members. The club includes a 40-bay driving range, 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole par three course. The facilities are similar to other golf centres operated by Clubhaus around the M25. Although Chelsfield Lakes needs some minor capital investment to bring the club up to the quality of a Clubhaus club there is significant potential to create a retail centre similar to the one operated at Clubhaus’ Chesfield Down Golf Club.

“We are delighted to announce the acquisition of these three clubs which fit so well with our current UK operations,” says Robert Bourne, Chairman of Clubhaus. “The clubs will provide the Group with development opportunities for expanding our health and fitness offering and increasing our presence in our core golf market.”
