Everyone who attended the 2011 GCMA conference will agree that it was a useful and enjoyable event and above all, an invaluable networking opportunity.
One Golf Club Manager who went away with an even bigger smile on his face than most was Mick Thorpe from Dewsbury District Golf Club. During the first two days of the conference, Mick had come along to the Jonas ClubMinder stand and taken part in a competition to win a cash prize for his Junior section. The rules of the game were simple: Guess the weight of a box full of airflow practice golf balls! The cost of entry was £5 per guess and ClubMinder pledged to double the pot at the end of the competition.
There ended up being 76 entries, totalling £380, which ClubMinder doubled so that the prize fund was £760. At the pre-dinner drinks on Tuesday, 15 November, Paul Mainstone, Director of ClubMinder, announced the name of the person who came closest to guessing the correct weight of the balls and that person was Mick Thorpe who took the pot on the behalf of the Juniors at Dewsbury District Golf Club.
Mick said: “We intend to put the money towards an open day in April 2012, intended for Families and Juniors in particular. We also intend to visit local schools to introduce them to Golf and have already committed to supporting one local school with their advertising material to help raise awareness in the classroom and local area.”
Dewsbury District Golf Club currently has a Junior section of 49 members, but hopefully with a boost from ClubMinder’s cash prize, they will grow this considerably in the near future. Watch this space for more information on how the Club used the money in the future.
For anyone who attended the GCMA conference back in 2009, it is also worth noting that Dr Brian Smith from BRS came a close runner up this year too, after winning ClubMinder’s Tree Campaign raffle last time round!

All Managers and Committee will soon be invited to the ClubMinder 2012 Spring Road Show and Challenge Cup. These one day events are held around the country during April and May and consist of a morning of seminars from ClubMinder, CLUBView and Teeofftimes.co.uk, followed by lunch and a round of golf in the afternoon. The top three Stableford scorers from each qualifying venue go through to the Grand Final in June and have the opportunity to win £500 for their Juniors. More details will be available duringJanuary.
