John Letters ambassador James Wilkinson secured his first victory on the PGA Europro Tour in the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters, at Montrose Links.

Wilkinson, 29, from Carlisle, shot a final-round 63 – the lowest score posted in the competition – to overhaul overnight leader Neil Fenwick’s five-shot advantage for a winning three-round total of 12-under-par 201 and a cheque for £10,000.

Wilkinson, attached to Brampton GC, in Cumbria, posted five birdies on the front nine and then hit four more to put him on target for a new course record, nine-under par round, at 13-under par. A dropped shot at 17 snatched away that honour but his incredible course-record-equalling 63 was enough to see off the field as he won by three shots as four players tied second.

Wilkinson said: “I was swinging it quite well on the range this morning and for the first few holes wanted to keep it steady. It was a bit windy out there today. I wanted to get off to a nice start and managed to get four under early on. I didn’t think about winning it at all, I was just trying to shoot the best score that I could and keep hitting it close.

“I stuck to my process all day and that helped me shoot 63; I am delighted. The course record would have been the icing on the cake but I wasn’t thinking of that. I just wanted to keep hitting the shots and I got rewarded. I can’t believe it – I’m over the moon.”

In addition to a healthy cheque, Wilkinson also won sponsors’ prizes which included a Motocaddy trolley, Bushnell Tour X range finder, Bolle sunglasses and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com.

The York-born Wilkinson has been playing John Letters clubs for four years and this week his bag contained Master Model satin irons, Master Model black wedges and the renowned Master Model black driver.
