Freedom of the Links for past Open Champions

On the eve of the Millennium Open past Champion golfers will be granted the Freedom of the Links by the St Andrews Links Trust. Each will receive a hand-made embossed certificate and a silver bag tag. In the history of the Links this honour has been granted only on very rare occasions

Golf and environment bodies unite to protect wildlife at St Andrews

The Open is a huge operation which places considerable pressure on an extremely valuable and internationally renowned local environment and a sand dune system of some fragility. The golfing authorities have done much to ensure that The Open takes place with minimal long-term impact to the Links and the neighbouring Eden Estuary – a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation
