A fire has ripped through the clubhouse at West Essex Golf Club in North London today [Monday, January 5) causing extensive damage to the two-storey building.

Firefighters from Loughton, Waltham Abbey, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service were called to the blaze, which broke out at the Chingford-based club at 2.40pm. No injuries have been reported and all staff and members have been accounted for.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “When the first fire crews arrived, they confirmed everyone was accounted for and no one was injured. Additional fire engines were requested to support. Firefighters are making good progress tackling the large fire. An investigation will be carried out, when safe to do so, to find the cause of the fire.”

West Essex’s new clubhouse was opened in 1989 by the late Sir Michael Bonallack, while the club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2025.
