Golfsmith: Macgregor Golf acquisition details confirmed

MacGregor branded products will be used as a key growth strategy for Golfsmith Europe business starting in 2010.

“It is with great excitement I can confirm Golfsmith’s acquisition of exclusive intellectual property rights to MacGregor Golf, effective Thursday, May 20th, 2009,” said Doug Poole, Managing Director, Golfsmith Europe. “The acquisition of MacGregor brand rights helps to further solidify Golfsmith International Inc and Golfsmith Europe LLC’s product strategy.

“MacGregor Golf is one of the oldest, most respected golf brands in the world. For most of its 112-year history it was one of the premier brands in our industry, known for great innovation, and quality. Its success as a brand on the PGA Tour is unparalleled and includes a record 59 major championships. Players such as Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Greg Norman, and dozens more have played and won with MacGregor products during their careers. It is a great opportunity for Golfsmith to be the new steward of such a historically relevant brand.”

To clarify the acquisition a bit further, intellectual property rights include all of the trademarks and patents that are registered under the MacGregor brand name. The exclusive rights to the MacGregor brand apply to most of the world including all European countries, the UK, North America, South America, Australia/New Zealand, and Africa. MacGregor branded products will be used as a key growth strategy for Golfsmith Europe business starting in 2010 and will enhance the business to business strategy for this key market.
