Robin Hiseman, the designer of JCB Golf & Country Club, has completed a comprehensive strategic review of the course at Banstead Downs Golf Club in Surrey.
The previous strategic review at Banstead Downs was undertaken in 2007 by Martin Ebert and led to several significant course changes. The 2026 review is far more extensive and sets out a clear, long-term framework for the evolution of the course over the next ten years and beyond.
Banstead Downs was opened in 1890 and founded as Sutton Ladies’ Golf Club. The course was originally designed by John Henry Taylor and later by James Braid. Its chalk base allows for excellent drainage helping to ensure the course remains open and playable on fine surfaces all year round.
The principal objectives of the strategic review are to enhance both the playability and the visual quality of the course, while also supporting the SSSI designation of Banstead Downs. In particular, the review encourages the restoration of areas of increasingly rare chalk downland, in line with the wider aims of the Banstead Commons Conservators.

“Our members get tremendous value for money, we very rarely close the course, and drainage is amazing, but we need to future proof the course and Robin has done a great job with this review” said Chair of Greens, Stephen Russell.
Jeremy Slessor, MD of European Golf Design said “Both myself and Robin enjoyed our visits to Banstead Downs. The course is a tough test and Robin’s plans, if implemented, will ensure this truly wonderful winter course improves with age. That said, we are both looking forward to playing the course when the weather improves.”
