O’Meara Design to undertake European Golf Course

Mark O’Meara, the 1998 Masters and Open Champion, is to design his first European golf course. O’Meara Design is responsible for one of two new courses being built at Carton Demesne near Dublin

O’Meara Design will work with its European design associate, European Golf Design, over the coming months through the stages of detailed design and construction for one of two new course being built minutes from the town of Maynooth in County Kildare. The other course is to be designed by Colin Montgomerie. The estate of Carton Demesne is about 20 kilometres west of Dublin, within 30 minutes of Dublin Airport. While the land for the O’Meara course is well wooded, the Montgomerie course will be constructed on gently rolling terrain.

The courses are part of a carefully phased resort development by the Mallaghan family. In addition to the two courses the project plans also include a hotel and convention centre, to be developed in association with the Starwood Hotel Group, and the complete restoration of the existing 17th century manor house, the ancestral home to the Fitzgerald family, Earls of Kildare who later became Dukes of Leinster.
