Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa in Sicily continues to elevate the golfing experience with a new phase of course development and infrastructure upgrades, reinforcing its position as one of Europe’s most distinctive golf destinations on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Following the complete renovation of the hotel and spa facilities and joining the Curio Collection by Hilton earlier in the year, improvements to Sicily’s oldest course continue to raise the bar.
The latest works follow the significant bunker renovation programme completed two years ago, in which every bunker on the course was upgraded with new drainage systems and sand along with some selective redesign to improve strategic play. Building on that success, attention has now turned to reconfiguring and enlarging tee complexes.
The first and third holes were extended last year and work continues this winter on holes six, seven, eight and 15 with further projects planned in subsequent phases.
Additionally, buggy paths are being levelled and resurfaced while lava stones, of which there are plenty as a unique feature of the course with its proximity to Mount Etna, will be cleared where necessary. This will improve access for both golf carts and trolleys, supporting increased demand as the fleet increases from 25 to 30 golf carts, and electric trolley rentals will expand from 12 to 22 for the 2026 season.

The recent acquisition of land adjacent to the golf course has enabled vegetation management and clearance work around holes six, 11, 14 and 15, improving air flow and light exposure on greens to enhance course conditioning while also opening up even more spectacular views of Europe’s most active volcano.
Owners Andrea and Francesco Scrofani and Mario Paoluzi commented: “This programme concentrates on the practical elements that shape everyday playing conditions focusing on playing surfaces, course flow, visibility and maintenance efficiency. Picciolo is defined by its volcanic terrain and historic character, and our goal is to protect those qualities while continuously refining the golfer experience. These upgrades are part of a long-term commitment to ensuring the course remains competitive and rewarding for all levels of play.”
Opened in 1989, the parkland course is characterised by tight fairways, thrilling elevation changes and unforgettable views of the Sicilian countryside. It is the oldest golf course on the Mediterranean’s largest island and has hosted four events on the Ladies European Tour in 1995-97 and 2011 in addition to the Sicilian Seniors Open in 2010. The course is complemented by a driving range, two chipping and bunker areas and a practice putting green.
Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa reopened in May after a full refurbishment and is once again open through the winter season. Its historic manor house features 100 en-suite rooms with views across the countryside and the snow-capped Mount Etna.
Golfers can now book a special winter package including three nights, breakfast, dinner, spa access and a green fee on the par-72 course designed by Luigi Rota Caremoli.
