Gordon Moir, the former Director of Greenkeeping at St Andrews Links Trust, has been awarded the University Medal at the University of St Andrews final Winter Graduation ceremony of 2023.

Moir led the greenkeeping department at St Andrews through three Open Championships, two Women’s Opens, a Senior Open, a Curtis Cup and several Dunhill Links Championship events before his retirement in 2018 after a 27-year career at the Home of Golf. He was just the eighth person to hold the title of Director of Greenkeeping at St Andrews since the first, Old Tom Morris, retired in 1904.

“It was completely unexpected to receive such an honour from the University. It’s an overwhelming and proud experience,” said Moir, 64, who started out his career as head greenkeeper at St Andrews’ Eden Course. “It’s been a great opportunity to receive this on behalf of all greenkeepers across the country working at every level, from small clubs to championship courses. This award helps to highlight the excellent work greenkeepers do at all levels in terms of the environment and sustainability.”

Moir joined graduates from the University’s International Education Institute, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, School of Classics, School of Management and School of Modern Languages in celebrating their academic success.
