St Andrews withdraws from Ryder Cup bid

The St Andrews Links Management Committee has decided not to pursue its own 2009 Ryder Cup bid in an attempt to strengthen Scotland’s bid by giving it a more concentrated focus on fewer venues – now reduced to a choice of four

St Andrews Links, one of the five venues involved in Scotland’s bid to secure the Ryder Cup in 2009, has announced that it is no longer wishes to be considered as a potential venue for the biennial match.

“We have been committed to ensuring that the 2009 Ryder Cup comes to Scotland and have given our full support to the Scottish bid. It has become clear that Scotland’s bid would be strengthened by a more concentrated focus on fewer venues and consequently the St Andrews Links Management Committee took the decision not to pursue our bid,” said Alan McGregor, general manager of St Andrews Links Trust.

“The important consideration is that the Ryder Cup comes to Scotland in 2009 as the economic benefits will be felt in Fife and elsewhere, not just at the successful venue. The Ryder Cup will have an impact on the whole of Scottish golf. We remain totally committed to the Scottish bid and will do everything in our power to ensure that the 2009 Ryder Cup is played in the land where the game began.”
