The R&A has appointed Dr Andy Owen as Research Manager within its Sustainable Golf team, strengthening its research and innovation services to support the long-term sustainability and resilience of golf courses worldwide.

Owen brings extensive experience in turfgrass research, education and the sports turf industry. He spent 12 years as International Technical Manager at ICL, following roles at STRI, Myerscough College and Bangor University.

In his position, he will help shape and manage The R&A’s global sustainable golf research strategy, identifying and overseeing projects addressing challenges that could affect the future of golf course management.

Dr Owen’s remit includes building a stronger evidence base to help the industry respond to environmental pressures, resource constraints and agronomic challenges, while ensuring research findings have practical value for clubs and course managers.

A priority will be translating scientific research into accessible information and guidance, enabling golf courses to apply the latest evidence when making sustainable, long-term management decisions.

Dr Owen will also lead the continued development of Golf Course 2030 and support The R&A’s involvement in the International Turfgrass Research Initiative.

Working alongside the wider Sustainable Golf team, including Dr Brett Morris, he will strengthen the research, evidence and practical guidance available to federations, clubs, practitioners and industry partners.

The appointment will expand the depth of research and insight offered by The R&A, with an emphasis on connecting global agronomy research and best practice with the everyday needs of those managing golf courses. For clubs seeking support, the enhanced service will provide a scientific foundation for planning and adapting their management practices to future challenges.
