Newsletter to shine spotlight on scientific golf research

Golf Scienz News has been launched to bring the rapidly expanding world of golf scientific research to a more mainstream audience.

A dedicated newsletter designed to bridge the gap between academic research and the global golfing community has been launched.

Golf Scienz News has been created to shine a light on the rapidly expanding world of golf science, delivering accessible, evidence-based insights from leading academics, institutions, and performance experts.

While the relationship between science and golf has grown significantly over the past decade, much of the research has remained confined to academic circles — until now.

“Golf Scienz News is about bringing that knowledge out into the open,” said Stephen Smith, Chief Neuroscientist at Sport Psychology Ltd and founder of the publication. “There is an incredible amount of work being done that can genuinely improve how golfers play, practice and understand the game. Our aim is to make that research visible, relevant and usable.”

The inaugural edition, released this week, highlights the breadth and depth of modern golf science. Key features include a scientifically validated six-stage pre-shot routine developed in collaboration with NCAA Division I coaches, offering golfers a structured and research-backed approach to performance. The issue also explores new findings on how face tape and residue can influence ball flight characteristics – an area of particular relevance to club fitting and practice environments.

Beyond equipment and technique, Golf Scienz News also examines the growing importance of performance factors such as sleep. Drawing on research from NASA simulations, the newsletter outlines how sleep deprivation can significantly impact both physical execution and decision-making on the golf course – often without players realising it.

In addition to sharing research, GSN aims to become a hub for collaboration across the industry. The platform invites academics, practitioners and organisations to contribute studies, propose new research initiatives, and explore funding opportunities. Plans are already underway to support projects ahead of the 2027 World Scientific Congress of Golf, which is being held at the Titleist Performance Institute in California.

“We want this to be a two-way conversation,” Smith added. “Whether you’re a researcher, coach, player or industry professional, Golf Scienz News offers a platform to connect, share and advance our collective understanding of the game.”
