As the eyes of the golfing world turn to Southport next week for the staging of The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, a giant 1,000 square metre portrait of local golfing legend Tommy Fleetwood has been unveiled in the city centre of nearby Liverpool.
The 40m x 25m painting has been created on the grass at Chavasse Park at Liverpool ONE to celebrate the start of the world’s oldest golf tournament.
The 1,000sqm image of Southport-born Fleetwood took three people two days to create using special grass pitch-marking paint and was unveiled today [Friday[ ahead of the start of the championship on July 16.

Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, said: “As the region welcomes visitors not just from around the UK, but from across the world, we wanted to mark this special occasion with a supersized display of support and we think we’ve got Tommy’s image down to a tee.
“For eight days the eyes of the golfing world will be focussed on neighbouring Royal Birkdale and I know people across the region are both proud and excited to be celebrating The Open’s return. There’s going to be a real buzz around the city for what is one of the world’s greatest golf championships and we’re delighted to be playing a small part in the celebrations with our huge display of support.”
